If you’re still up and you live reasonably near the poles, Aurorawatch have issued a red alert for an aurora tonight.
The alerts come from the magnetometer at Lancaster in the UK, and you can subscribe (free) to get alerts by eMail. The sky to the north here is clear but there’s no sign of anything yet. I’ll look out again later but can’t stay up too late tonight. Have to visit the post office tomorrow and the lazy buggers are only active during the day.
I’ve only ever seen the Aurora once, but it was the best possible vantage point. Out in the country, miles from any street lights, and it was an incredible sight.
Naturally, I didn’t have a camera.
